Reddit Hackathon Update: Expectations around Splash Screens

Hi All,

We're so excited to see so many awesome developers participating in our hackathon!

Users have reported that Devvit Web's splash screen parameters lack sufficient customization options. Because of this we want to clarify our judging expectations.

We will not judge splash screens as part of the judging criteria.

We are actively working on the ability for apps to bring web views directly inline to a post, this will allow developers to have full control around customization. After the hackathon ends, we plan to release this experimental feature with updated docs.

In the interim, feel free to use the default splash screen for any hackathon submissions. Using blocks (e.g. blocks UI using addCustomPostType) as a workaround for a splash screen is acceptable, but not required. We understand our platform’s current limitations here and will not be reducing scoring for an app if it is using the splash screen template.

We encourage you to focus your efforts on the core functionality and user experience of your games!

Remember

  1. Your app must be uploaded to developers.reddit.com (it does not need to be published)

  2. Make sure that your testing subreddit is set to public. Link the judges to one example game post in that subreddit

  3. Submit the feedback survey to be eligible for the feedback award

  4. Review the event overview and judging criteria here

We can’t wait to see what you build!
